What is Picatinny Rail?
The name Picatinny Rail is given with reference to an army equipment factory the full name of which was Picatinny Arsenal. It is the headquarters of the US Army Equipment Research, Development and Engineering Centre. It started to operate as a gunpowder shop in 1880. After the Second World War, it became a centre for research and development.
Lexical Meaning of Picatinny
Picatinny is originally a Native American word. It means ``calm water and the hill next to it`` in the Algonquian dialect, a language used by the Lenni Lenapes, the resident people of that area.
Areas of Usage
Previously, it was designed, for various firearms, as a mounting base that could be fixed to the barrel with the ring or to the body with different apparatus. Later, since it was realized how much the areas of usage could expand, it was named with the rail interface/adapter system and adapted to each weapon. It was quite successful as it is the most affordable and universal accessory attachment solution.
Picatinny Rail is a piece of tactical equipment usually found in assault rifles manufactured in NATO standards. It is located at the top of the weapons and its purpose is to attach the scopes to the weapons. Over time, its usage area has expanded, and it has enabled the attachment of night vision sights, standard optical sights, laser targeting systems and similar equipment.
